A 69-year-old garbage truck driver has passed away in the hospital following an early morning accident involving two trucks in a small town west of Melbourne on Monday.

Key points:

  • Police reported that heavy fog was affecting visibility at the time of the accident.
  • One driver was training the other on the route during the incident.
  • The 69-year-old died in the hospital two days later after suffering critical injuries.

Authorities indicated that thick fog was hindering visibility as both garbage trucks traveled west along Mt Wallace-Ballark Road at Mount Wallace around 5:30 AM.

During the crash, one of the drivers was instructing the other, which led to the collision that left the 69-year-old man from Melton South in a critical condition.

He was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Monday with life-threatening injuries and tragically passed away there on Wednesday evening.

The other driver involved, a 56-year-old man from Melton West, did not sustain any injuries in the incident.

According to Moorabool Shire, the deceased was an employee of a waste contractor working with the council. A spokesperson conveyed the council’s condolences to the family and friends of the driver.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances of the crash, with authorities preparing a report for the coroner. WorkSafe is also looking into the cause of the collision.
