Free Automotive Careers Expo in Brisbane

High school students and job seekers throughout South East Queensland will have the opportunity to explore available career options in the automotive sector at a free Automotive Careers Expo taking place in Brisbane on May 22.

Partnership with Capricorn

The Motor Trades Association of Queensland (MTA Queensland) has joined forces with Capricorn to organize this event at the Brisbane Showgrounds, allowing local students and others to connect with businesses in trucking and various other sectors offering career pathways.

Industry Skills Shortage

The automotive industry is currently experiencing a significant skills shortage due to rapid technological advancements and a growing demand for skilled professionals.

Insights from the State of the Nation Report

According to Capricorn’s 2024 State of the Nation Report, 54% of automotive business owners surveyed indicated that one of their biggest challenges is finding qualified staff, including apprentices. The report highlights that business owners are not merely waiting for solutions regarding the talent pipeline.

Importance of Apprenticeships

With 37% of respondents indicating they are very likely to hire an apprentice in the future, engaging the next generation and piquing their interest in automotive careers becomes even more crucial. MTA Queensland CEO Rod Camm emphasized that apprenticeships play a vital role in the industry’s future.

Highlighting Career Diversity

Capricorn QLD Member Director and Board Chair Mark Rowe reiterated the importance of these expos, stating that they effectively introduce young people to the diverse range of roles within the industry. He noted, “Events like this are essential for our industry’s growth and the ongoing success of our workforce.”

Successful Previous Events

The Brisbane expo is part of a series of successful events that have taken place across Queensland, including Bundaberg, Cairns, Hervey Bay, Mackay, Rockhampton, Roma, Sunshine Coast, and Townsville, where over 700 students and their families had the chance to explore automotive careers. Many participants from these events have already begun their journey in the industry by securing work experience and apprenticeship opportunities.

Event Details

Representatives from various Australian Apprenticeship Support Networks and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) will be present to offer advice on Vocational Education and Training (VET) pathways. The expo is open to local high school students, job seekers, parents, guardians, and automotive employers, with RSVPs required.
